President. He attempted to run Chile on socialist (some said Communist lines) and was killed during a military coup.
Jorge Amado
1912–2001 - Brazilian
Novelist and committed Communist. His novels depicted the poverty and hopelessness of much of the rural population of his native Brazil.
La Argentina
1890–1936 - Argentinian
Dancer. She helped establish the value of Spanish dance as an expression of passion and as an art form.
Sir Frederick Ashton
1906–1988 - Ecuadorian/English
Dancer and choreographer. He helped develop the Vic Wells Ballet into the Royal Ballet and became its director after the retirement of the legendary Ninette de Valois.
Simón Bolivar
1783–1830 - Venezuelan
Liberator. He was a central figure in South American wars of independence.
Che Guevara
1928–1967 - Argentinian
A romantic revolutionary and a leader of the Cuban Revolution. He was executed in the jungles of Bolivia.
Augusto Pinochet
1915–2006 - Chilean
General. His coup ended Allende's life as well as his Marxist government.
